Suriname (163.270 sq. km) is situated in South-America, with French-Guyana in the East, Brazil in the South, Guyana in the West and  borders to the Atlantic Ocean in the North.

  • Tropical humid climate; daily temperatures vary from 23 to 33 Centigrades.
  • 2 rain seasons: (May-July) / (November-January)
  • 2 dry seasons: (February-April) / (August-October)
  • About 80% of the country is covered with uncultivated tropical rainforest, where several native Indian and Marroon villages can be found.
  • Suriname consists of 10 districts
  • Suriname was a Dutch Colony and became independent in 1975 (Republic of Suriname)
  • Official language is Dutch.
  • Inheritance of Colonial past has given beautiful wooden colonial buildings in Paramaribo and an interesting diversity of ethnic groups, cultures, religions, languages, customs and cuisines.
  • The rich blend of ethnic groups (East-Indians, Indonesians, Creoles, Chinese and other ethnic groups) lives harmoniously and knows what hospitality means.
  • The majority of the country’s inhabitants live in the coastal areas; the largest concentrations in Paramaribo and New Nickerie.
