Winston's NotesBeing Surinamese and also an experienced traveler please allow me to share some thoughts with you. You will find the country of Suriname very relaxing, from the coastal towns to the deep interior. This is the most important part to remember when comparing to other countries. There are many many activities in which one can participate but the atmosphere is very relaxing. Even though Dutch is widely spoken you'll find that you can easily help yourself along with English, this is a very big advantage we have over the rest of South-America. Furthermore I can assure that Suriname is a very safe and secure destination, with crime being the lowest in the region, by far. At the moment the tourist sector is in development which has the advantage that the destination is not spoiled, and because of the low number of tourists we are able to offer a very personal approach to all our visitors. The government still insists on visas when you want to visit Suriname. We cannot do anything about that except assure you that it is worth it! When you’re in the jungle you realize a lot of things, and eventually you appreciate life and the beauty of nature even more. For instance on a clear evening(and there a lot of those in Suriname) you can enjoy a good look at some of the planets especially Venus and Mars. I’ve even managed to take a few good photographs with my favourite lens the 400mm Canon. And when I use my spotting scope it is possible to see the moons of mars. In the daytime a lot of wildlife especially birds can be photographed using this lens. The macaws which pass during the morning and the late afternoon are especially suitable for good shots. In the area there are lots of things to photograph like colourful insects, hummingbirds and mammals such as monkeys and otters. The river makes for some nice landscape shots and will not let you down. We’ve put in some links to some great photographers who have done a lot of work in Suriname. Again I am continuously enjoying taking pictures in the interior it is truly an exciting endeavor. Because of the intense glare you will find it easier to use the viewfinder of the camera instead of the LCD screen. Suriname is a great place to take your photographic equipment and also your scopes and other equipment. Using it here will be a great experience and because the country is safe and secure you don’t have to worry about bringing your stuff along with you. Regards, Winston
